Cloth Diapering Without Your Own Laundry Machines

It never ceases to amaze me just what parents (but mamas in particular!) can do when the going gets tough. We are stubborn creatures, us mamas--aren't we? When we set our mind to something, we can do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Let's face it--cloth diapering isn't always the most convenient thing to be doing. It isn't always the most glamorous. We may take a lot of flack for the crazy things we do to maintain our beloved fluff. But, in the end, we do what we think is best for our family's health and savings. This definitely translates into the laundry topic, where many of us will find us plunging hands into the toilet, sticking noses into diaper liners to check for cleanness, and staying up til well past midnight just to make sure our diapers make it onto the line to dry overnight.

That being said, as much as many of us complain about our cloth diaper laundry routines (I myself am just finishing up Day 2 of doing some diaper stripping!), I think the majority of us know deep down that we are very blessed to have laundry machines in our homes or apartments. Whether top loading or front loading, no matter what kind of soap or routine or wash cycle it comes down to, most of us are fortunate enough to have the help of machines to do our daily cloth diaper washing for us.

But what if you are committed to using cloth dipes but don't have in-home or in-suite laundry? What if, in a pinch, your luxurious machines kick the bucket and leave you machineless until the repair man can get out on Monday morning, or until you can afford a new set?

This past week, I've stumbled upon a few terrific reads on how you can address diaper laundry when you find yourself without a washer and dryer of your own. Kudus to all the brave, hardworking, and determined mamas who take on this type of task! I know I for one sure appreciate my washing machine a whole lot more after reading what these ladies do for the sake of the little bums they love!

  1. Great article! Sometimes I think about how all those mamas back in the day managed without laundry machines - really puts in all into perspective.

  2. I have hand-washed a few diapers when I was on holidays, but I don't think I'd be committed enough to do it full time at home. Those ladies are an inspiration!
